Lagos Police Declare Sowore Wanted Over Alleged Incitement of Violent Protest

The Lagos State Police Command has declared Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate, wanted over allegations of inciting a violent protest in Lagos.

The State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, announced the declaration during a strategic security meeting held at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Monday, November 10. According to him, Sowore was invited for questioning regarding the alleged offense but failed to honour the invitation.

Jimoh stated that although Sowore’s lawyer had earlier written to inform the Command of plans to present him for questioning, neither the publisher nor his legal representative has appeared as promised.

He explained that the declaration was made pursuant to Section 215 (1), (4), and (5) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the Commissioner of Police to maintain law and order and ensure the protection of lives and property.

“He never showed up. If you are declared wanted, you are to report to the nearest police station, not call me on the phone,” the Commissioner said.

He directed officers across the state to arrest Sowore anywhere he is found — whether in public or private locations — and bring him to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

“The order to arrest him stands. Any officer who sights him, whether on the road, in a restaurant, or elsewhere, should arrest him and bring him to the SCID for proper investigation,” he added.

Sowore has yet to issue a public statement in response to the declaration.
