The Lagos State Police Command has disbanded a tactical squad and detained its members after a viral video surfaced showing officers assaulting a motorist during a stop-and-search operation.

The incident, captured by the motorist’s smart glasses—believed to have a hidden camera—escalated when officers attempted to forcibly remove the device. One officer was seen striking the individual, prompting widespread outrage online.

In response, Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, had ordered immediate disciplinary action.

“Following a thorough preliminary investigation, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate detention of the entire team. The officers will face an orderly room trial to ensure justice is served swiftly and transparently,” Hundeyin stated.

The implicated tactical unit has been dissolved, and a new team has been formed. According to the police, the newly constituted squad will operate under strict adherence to international policing standards, prioritizing human rights, integrity, and zero tolerance for misconduct.

The Nigeria Police Force also condemned the actions of the officers involved, reiterating its commitment to accountability and professionalism.

“We urge members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement and to report any instances of misconduct through established channels,” the police statement added.

The disciplinary process is ongoing, with further updates expected in the coming days.
