The Lagos State Government has restated its ban on corporal punishment in public schools, urging educators to adopt counseling as a disciplinary measure.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, reiterated the policy on Monday, stressing that flogging remains prohibited due to its potential risks, including injuries and fatalities.

“Flogging is not an effective correctional method. Lagos, like other states, has banned corporal punishment in schools, replacing it with counseling to guide students properly,” he said.

He noted that minor disciplinary actions like kneeling, picking up litter, or cutting grass within school premises could serve as alternatives.

“This approach reinforces positive behavior and fosters a better learning environment,” he added.

Alli-Balogun also attributed student indiscipline to inadequate parental guidance, urging parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s upbringing.

Lagos State banned corporal punishment in 2022 and introduced the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme to enhance student welfare and discipline.
