Lagos to Ban Single-Use Plastics, Including Pure and Bottled Water, Sets Implementation Date

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to ban single-use plastics, including sachet water (popularly known as “pure water”) and bottled water, as part of its environmental sustainability efforts. The ban, aimed at curbing plastic pollution, is set to take effect on January 1, 2025.

The government’s decision follows growing concerns over the environmental impact of plastic waste, which contributes to drainage blockages, flooding, and pollution in the state. The ban will affect a range of plastic products, including single-use water containers and plastic bags commonly used across Lagos.

In preparation for the ban, the state government is working with stakeholders to raise awareness and provide alternatives to plastic packaging. Authorities have urged businesses, manufacturers, and consumers to adopt eco-friendly packaging solutions before the enforcement date.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has emphasized that this initiative is crucial to achieving Lagos’ goal of becoming a greener and more sustainable city. He also highlighted that enforcing the ban will require cooperation from both the public and private sectors to reduce the environmental footprint of plastic waste.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) will oversee the implementation of the ban, ensuring compliance and providing guidelines for the proper disposal and recycling of plastic products.
