M23 Rebels Advance Toward Bukavu After Capturing Goma, UN Reports

The United Nations has reported that M23 rebels, bolstered by the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF), are advancing south toward Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, following their recent capture of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN’s peacekeeping chief, stated that the rebels are approximately 60 kilometers north of Bukavu and progressing rapidly. He noted the strategic significance of Kavumu Airport, located just south of their current position, suggesting that its capture would be another substantial gain for the rebels.

In response to the advancing rebels, Congolese military bases in Bukavu have been reallocating troops to strengthen defenses along the anticipated route of the M23. Local authorities have also initiated the recruitment of civilians to assist in the city’s defense.

Despite Rwanda’s denial of supporting the M23 rebels, the Congolese government has designated the group as a terrorist organization. The UN has documented severe human rights violations in areas under M23 control, including the occupation of schools and hospitals, forced recruitment, and the displacement of civilians.

In Goma, the situation remains tense but shows signs of stabilization. Some basic services have been restored, and UN peacekeepers have managed to resupply certain positions. However, the city’s airport remains non-operational due to significant runway damage. Recent assessments by the World Health Organization and the Congolese government indicate that between Sunday and Thursday, approximately 700 people were killed, and 2,800 others were wounded and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The UN continues to advocate for diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting and pursue a political resolution to the conflict.
