French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a “massive” crackdown on drug trafficking and organised crime, urging tougher state action at ports and airports identified as major entry points for illicit drugs.

Macron made the call on Thursday during a high-level meeting at the Élysée Palace attended by the prime minister and several cabinet members. According to the French presidency, the president said France must adopt a “change of scale” in its response to the growing drug trade.

Local media reported that a comprehensive anti-drug plan is expected to be unveiled within a month.

The French leader stressed the need to strengthen security operations at ports and airports, describing them as critical gateways used by drug traffickers. He said measures already implemented in French Guiana had yielded positive results and should be replicated in other strategic locations.

Macron also announced that “rapid operations” would be launched in mainland France in the coming days, while ongoing security actions would continue in overseas territories.

Highlighting the challenges facing the French West Indies, particularly Martinique, Macron called for a “total and massive” mobilisation of additional interministerial human and technical resources. He urged officials to submit concrete proposals within a month and to develop an emergency plan for the archipelagos, including enhanced regional cooperation with partners in North and South America.

The Élysée added that Macron is expected to visit the French West Indies in the coming months.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to dismantling drug networks, Macron said provisions in the proposed everyday security bill must be “strong.” The draft legislation is being spearheaded by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
