French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Russia to accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States and Ukraine, emphasizing the need to halt hostilities.
Macron made this appeal after discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, March 14.
In his nightly address, Zelenskyy stated that he and Macron had deliberated on diplomatic efforts, potential avenues for peace, and the mechanisms for overseeing a ceasefire. He reaffirmed that France fully supports Ukraine in this endeavor.
Posting on X, Macron said:
“I spoke today with President @ZelenskyyUa and then with Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer following the progress made during the meeting between the United States and Ukraine in Jeddah on Tuesday.
“Russia must now accept the U.S.-Ukrainian proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. The Russian aggression in Ukraine must end. The atrocities must stop. So must the delaying statements.”
Macron also highlighted an ongoing international effort to bolster Ukraine’s defenses, noting that a meeting in Paris had gathered about 40 defense chiefs. He added that discussions would continue via videoconference with Starmer, Zelenskyy, and other partners to solidify support for Ukraine and achieve lasting peace.
