An 18-year-old student, Joseph Chive, has been ordered to be remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre by a Chief Magistrates’ Court over the alleged killing of a 14-year-old girl, Mimidoo Victor.
Chive, a resident of Veterinary Layout, Northbank, Makurdi, is facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide.
Presiding over the case on Friday, Chief Magistrate Kevin Mbanongun declined to take the defendant’s plea on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction. He ordered Chive’s remand and adjourned the matter until August 28 for mention.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Godwin Ato, the incident occurred on May 25 at Veterinary Layout, Northbank. He told the court that the case was reported at the ‘C’ Division Police Station by the victim’s father, Mr. Victor Ayom.
“While the altercation was going on, the defendant rushed into his room, brought a loaded dane gun and shot the girl on the head,” Ato stated.
He added that the defendant was arrested during a police investigation and confessed to the crime. The dane gun used in the incident was also recovered.
The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, 2004 and Section 222 of the Penal Code, Laws of Benue, 2004.
