Man Charged After Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump at Florida Golf Course

Federal prosecutors have filed gun-related charges against Ryan Routh, the suspect accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course. The charges were made a day after Routh, armed with an assault-style rifle, was spotted hiding in the bushes near the course where Trump was playing.

Routh fled the scene in a vehicle, abandoning his weapon and two backpacks, but was later apprehended by authorities. He appeared in federal court in West Palm Beach on Monday, shackled and dressed in prison attire.

The incident marks the second attempt on Trump’s life in two months, following a campaign rally shooting in which the former president was grazed in the ear. Trump, unharmed in both attacks, thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift response.

Routh, 58, is a known supporter of Ukraine and had reportedly traveled there after Russia’s 2022 invasion. Ukrainian officials have denied any connection to him, accusing Russia of using the link for propaganda purposes. Meanwhile, the Kremlin suggested the assassination attempt was linked to U.S. support for Kyiv.

President Joe Biden has ordered additional resources to ensure Trump’s safety in the run-up to the November 5 election, with Vice President Kamala Harris condemning the violence.
