Man in court for alleged possession of fake dollar notes

The Police in Lagos on Monday brought a 48-year-old man, Idowu Ajewole, before an Ikeja  Chief Magistrates’ Court, for alleged possession of fake dollar notes.

The defendant is standing trial before Magistrate Mr L.A Owolabi, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and  possession of fake currency.

The prosecutor, Insp John Iberedem, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Dec.17, at Iju Ishaga in Lagos.

He said that the defendant was in possession of 17 pieces of  $100 fake bank notes.

He said the defendant knew that the bank notes were forged.

“The defendant unlawfully kept the said fake dollar notes to defraud  innocent people around,” Iberedem said.

He said the offences contravened the provisions of Section 370 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 370 provides seven years imprisonment as punishment for the offence.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Owolabi  granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reliable  sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Jan. 24 for mention.
