A man who drove a car into a crowd in Changde City, Hunan Province, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for endangering public safety through dangerous means.

The Changde Intermediate People’s Court delivered the verdict on Monday, convicting Huang Wen of intentionally harming the public during an incident on Nov. 19.

According to the court, Huang crashed his car into a crowd in Dingcheng District and, after the vehicle stopped, exited and continued attacking people. The attack left 30 individuals injured, including 18 students.

The court revealed that Huang’s actions stemmed from frustrations over investment losses and family conflicts, which drove him to act violently.

The sentencing reflects the severity of his crime while granting a reprieve, allowing for a potential commutation of the death penalty after two years if no further offenses are committed.

This incident underscores the importance of addressing public safety concerns and mental health issues to prevent similar tragedies.
