France captain Kylian Mbappé will miss Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Iceland after aggravating a right ankle injury, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Saturday.

The Real Madrid forward, who has been managing what officials described as a “small niggle” in his ankle, suffered two further knocks during France’s 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in Paris. Despite scoring the opening goal, the 26-year-old was substituted before the final whistle after appearing in visible pain.

In a statement, the FFF said, “Kylian Mbappé will not be able to play Monday against Iceland. After discussions with coach Didier Deschamps, the captain has been released to his club (Real Madrid) and will not be replaced.”

The development is a major blow to France’s attacking lineup, which is already without Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Marcus Thuram, and Bradley Barcola due to injuries.

Deschamps later confirmed the extent of Mbappé’s discomfort, explaining, “He has a sore ankle and took another knock there. He preferred to come off; the pain was quite significant.”

France remain unbeaten in Group D after three matches, with Adrien Rabiot and Florian Thauvin also scoring in Friday’s victory. Les Bleus could secure early qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico if they defeat Iceland and Ukraine fail to beat Azerbaijan.

Mbappé will now return to Madrid to begin recovery, with his club expected to closely monitor his condition ahead of upcoming fixtures.
