Authorities in Mexico are investigating a deadly shooting that took place shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Calzada de Tlalpan and Napoleon Street in the Moderna neighborhood of the Benito Juárez borough, according to Mexico News Daily.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. Mexico City’s Security Ministry and Attorney General’s Office, with support from the federal government, are leading the investigation. Surveillance footage from nearby cameras is being analyzed to help identify the suspects.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, elected in October, expressed her “deep sadness” in a statement issued by the city government, vowing that there would be no impunity. “The culprits will be arrested and they must face justice,” the statement read.

President Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed the media, promising full federal support for Brugada and a thorough investigation. She confirmed that the victims, Munoz and Guzman, were affiliated with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), the ruling party in Mexico.

This incident follows the May 11 killing of Morena mayoral candidate Yesenia Lara Gutierrez and four others during a campaign event in Veracruz. Gutierrez was running for mayor of Texistepec in the June 1 general election. Three others were injured in that attack.

The shootings highlight the ongoing violence targeting political figures in the lead-up to Mexico’s national elections.
