Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has disclosed that he was offered performance-enhancing drugs during his time at Chelsea, Soccernet.ng reports.
The revelation comes amid controversy surrounding Chelsea forward Mykhailo Mudryk, who reportedly failed a drug test last month. The 22-year-old Ukrainian’s situation has sparked discussions on doping in football, with potential consequences including a four-year ban.
Reflecting on his own experience, Mikel, who played for Chelsea for 11 years and was part of their golden era, emphasized the importance of vigilance regarding nutrition and supplements for athletes. Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the retired 37-year-old shared:
“For him (Mudryk) and his family, I hope he is innocent. I remember when we were playing, if someone offered me something, I would always ask what it was. I’m responsible for what I put in my body. Friends and acquaintances would suggest substances, claiming they could enhance performance. But I always questioned their legality and refused to engage.”
Mikel stressed the need for athletes to take responsibility for their actions and nutritional choices, adding:
“Mudryk is innocent until proven guilty. However, we must all remain cautious about what we consume.”
If confirmed guilty, Mudryk would be the first Chelsea player in years to test positive for doping, a scandal that could severely impact his career.
