Former Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel has called on striker Nicolas Jackson to remain at Stamford Bridge, insisting the Senegalese still has a key role to play at the club.

Jackson, 24, joined Chelsea from Villarreal in 2023, and has since scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists in 81 appearances across all competitions. Despite his numbers, the forward has faced ongoing criticism for his inconsistency in front of goal.

His performances have divided fans—some see him as a future star, while others believe he’s not up to Chelsea’s standard. Even Mikel, speaking on the Obi One Podcast, previously questioned Jackson’s starting role but stressed that healthy competition is essential in top squads.

“I hope he stays, because I still think he has a massive part to play this season,” Mikel said.

With new signings Liam Delap and Joao Pedro joining Chelsea’s attack this summer, Jackson has slipped down the pecking order under new manager Enzo Maresca. Rumours of a potential exit have since circulated.

Still, Mikel believes Jackson should fight for his place.

“You win games and tournaments by having competition in the squad. It pushes players to improve,” he said.

Mikel praised Chelsea’s transfer strategy this summer, including the sale of fringe players that generated over $200 million, and highlighted the club’s need to sign a centre-back to cover for the injured Levi Colwill, who he described as Chelsea’s best defender.

“We’ve done great business. Not just with signings, but also with the players we’ve let go,” he added.

Jackson’s last appearance for Chelsea was during the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against Flamengo, where he was sent off. Reports suggest Chelsea have placed a price tag on the striker should he push for a move.

Despite their past exchange—Jackson once told Mikel to “shut up” after a goal celebration—the former midfielder maintains his support for the player.

“He brings quality to this club. I’d be very happy if he stays,” Mikel concluded.
