The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating the influence of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in the South-East region.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, made this known during a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja, where he provided updates on ongoing military operations.
He acknowledged that despite military efforts, the sit-at-home order issued by IPOB persists in some areas due to fear among residents. However, he emphasized that troops under Operation Udoka continue to conduct decisive operations to restore normalcy.
“If they [IPOB] give a sit-at-home order, we tell residents to go about their normal activities. But in some areas, people remain indoors out of fear of attacks,” Kangye said.
He assured that military commanders in the region were working diligently to secure the South-East from IPOB and ESN threats.
Kangye also urged the public to rely on official military reports rather than external narratives, stating that the military provides the most accurate information on counter-terrorism efforts in Nigeria.
“Imagine something happening in my house. I am the head of the house, and someone else outside is reporting on it. Which report would be more accurate?” he asked.
Addressing the recent Global Terrorism Index report, Kangye refrained from directly disputing its findings but encouraged the media to present a balanced and factual account of the security situation in Nigeria.
“I’m not here to counter what they have published, but as observers, you should provide the correct version of what is happening,” he added.
The military reiterated its dedication to ensuring peace and stability in the South-East, urging residents to trust ongoing operations aimed at restoring order in the region.
