A tragic shooting spree in southern Montenegro has left 12 people dead, including two children, before the gunman turned the weapon on himself, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The massacre began on Wednesday evening in Bajice village, near the town of Cetinje, when the assailant opened fire at a restaurant, killing four victims at the scene, according to prosecutor Andrijana Nastic. The gunman proceeded to target victims at four other locations before ending his life.

“Each location has been inspected, and evidence collected. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of this tragic event,” Nastic told reporters in Cetinje.

Four individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital in Podgorica, the capital. Health Minister Vojislav Simun confirmed that the lives of three of the injured remain in critical condition.

Police ruled out any connections to organized crime and revealed that the firearms used in the attack were illegal.

The government has declared three days of national mourning, starting Thursday, as the nation grapples with the rare occurrence of a mass shooting in the Balkan region.
