Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces are preparing to launch a competitive tender for the modernization of their F-16 fighter jets, following mounting dissatisfaction with U.S. defense contractor L3Harris Technologies.

The Moroccan military high command has openly criticized the company’s handling of upgrade contracts, prompting Rabat to explore alternative suppliers for the advanced electronics needed to enhance its fleet.

By seeking bids from multiple defense firms, Morocco aims to secure better terms and ensure faster delivery timelines for its air force modernization program. The move also underscores Rabat’s growing willingness to diversify defense partnerships beyond traditional U.S. contractors.

The F-16 upgrade forms part of Morocco’s broader military modernization drive, which has recently included joint exercises with the U.S., negotiations with Brazilian and American manufacturers for new aircraft, and talks to integrate Israeli missile systems into its naval fleet.

Analysts note that the tender could attract bids from major aerospace players such as Lockheed Martin, Dassault, and Embraer, further intensifying competition in the North African defense market.
