Mother, 5 Children Die from Expired Cassava Flour

A mother and her five children died after consuming Danwake, a local Hausa dish made from expired cassava flour, in Karkari village, Gwarzo Local Government Area, Kano State. The tragic event occurred at the residence of the late Malam Abdulkarim on August 15.

According to neighbor Garba Muhammad, the family used the expired cassava flour due to economic hardship and hunger. All six individuals, including Alhakatu Abdulkarim and her children—Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu—were confirmed dead at Gwarzo General Hospital.

The State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident on August 17 and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of their deaths.
