Mother confesses to killing baby, hides body in cabinet

A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked the town of Novo Lino in northeast Brazil after a 15-day-old baby girl was found dead inside a wooden cabinet at her family home. The infant, Ana de Oliveira, had been missing for days before her mother, Eduarda de Oliveira, confessed to killing her and hiding the body in a plastic bag.

Authorities said Eduarda, 22, initially provided multiple false accounts of Ana’s disappearance, triggering a citywide search beginning Friday, April 11. One version alleged that four men in a black vehicle had abducted the baby while she waited with her five-year-old son at a bus stop. In another version, she claimed a blonde woman pulled a gun on her and forced her to surrender the child.

Eduarda later said the baby was kidnapped by two hooded men who allegedly broke into her home and assaulted her at gunpoint. However, surveillance footage and investigations by the Alagoas Civil Police contradicted all her statements.

After several days of inconsistent claims, Eduarda finally led family members to the cabinet in her laundry room where Ana’s lifeless body was found stuffed in a plastic bag. She later admitted to suffocating her daughter, blaming the baby’s constant cries and loud noises from a nearby bar for depriving her of sleep for two nights in a row.

Despite her confession, police say Eduarda has only been arrested for concealing a body. Murder charges have not yet been filed.

Investigators are also probing whether someone helped her hide the baby’s body. “The mother may have become desperate and asked a family member for help,” said Alagoas Civil Police chief Igor Diego. “These are questions the investigation will still pursue.”

The tragic incident has left the local community in shock as authorities continue to seek justice for baby Ana.
