MURIC Warns Against IGP’s Tenure Extension, Cites Risks to Police Efficiency

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned against the tenure extension of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, warning that such a move could weaken efficiency, create division, and erode public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement on Monday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, expressed concerns over the amendment to the Police Act, which now allows the IGP to remain in office until the expiration of the term in the appointment letter rather than retiring at age 60.

“The move has sparked debate, with some arguing that it is necessary to maintain continuity and stability in the police force, while others see it as a violation of the Police Act,” Akintola stated.

He acknowledged the recent achievements of the police, including the rescue of kidnap victims and the resolution of high-profile crimes, but warned that extending Egbetokun’s tenure could jeopardize these gains and cause discontent within the force.

While MURIC primarily advocates for the rights of Nigerian Muslims, Akintola emphasized that this issue affects the security and well-being of all citizens.

Advising the IGP to retire honorably, he remarked, “Real heroes leave the stage while the ovation is loudest,” suggesting that Egbetokun should step aside to preserve his legacy.
