Over 285 inmates at the Kirikiri Female Correctional Facility in Lagos received vital health support and essential supplies during a Christmas outreach organized by the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Lagos State branch.

The event, held on Saturday, aimed to promote health awareness and provide a sense of belonging to the inmates, featuring a mental health talk and the distribution of items such as rice, sanitary pads, toiletries, medicines, clothes, milk, footwear, drinks, and confectioneries.

Dr. Funmi Ige, President of MWAN Lagos, led the initiative, emphasizing the importance of extending empathy and care to the women in custody.

Former MWAN President, Dr. Omowunmi Bakare, addressed the inmates during a health talk, urging them to prioritize their well-being despite their circumstances.

“Pay attention to your menstrual cycle to detect any irregularities or unusual symptoms,” she said. “Avoid using cloth or tissue as substitutes for sanitary pads to prevent health complications. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice instead of self-medicating.”

Dr. Folake Ojo, a dentist and MWAN team member, highlighted the significance of personal and oral hygiene. She advised inmates to brush their teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste and the right toothbrush to maintain healthy teeth and fresh breath.

“Limit sugary foods and drinks to prevent oral health issues like toothaches,” Ojo added, while also stressing the importance of keeping hair clean to avoid lice and germs.

The MWAN outreach reflects the organization’s commitment to addressing health disparities and supporting vulnerable communities during the festive season.
