The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that the ban on sachet alcohol remains in effect, with a temporary lift valid only until December 31, 2025.

Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that the recent ministerial decision to temporarily lift the ban should not be misinterpreted as a permanent reversal.

“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by Dec. 31, 2025,” Azikiwe said. “After this date, the full enforcement of the ban will commence.”

He explained that the grace period allows manufacturers and regulators time to work together toward a structured implementation of the policy.

Azikiwe also highlighted the agency’s nationwide sensitisation campaign, noting that public awareness efforts have reached all states and distributors have been instructed not to sell alcohol to individuals under 18, in line with labelling regulations.

He praised the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for supporting the awareness initiative and reassured Nigerians of NAFDAC’s commitment to phasing out alcohol products in sachets and bottles smaller than 200 milliliters from January 2026.
