The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched drug safety clubs in Gombe schools to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among students.
Speaking at the inauguration of the clubs at Government Day Secondary School, Gandu, on Wednesday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the agency’s commitment to tackling substance abuse.
Represented by the agency’s state coordinator, James Agada, Adeyeye said the initiative falls under NAFDAC’s “Catch Them Young Consumer Safety Clubs” program, which aims to instill a culture of quality control and drug safety among young people.
“This programme is designed to combat drug abuse, eliminate fake and substandard products, and encourage youth engagement in public health advocacy,” she said.
She noted that six schools had been selected for the initiative, stressing that young people, especially women, remain vulnerable to substance abuse.
“The agency has taken the campaign against drug abuse to the grassroots by re-establishing the clubs in secondary schools. In collaboration with teachers, we will work closely with students to prevent lives of addiction and destruction,” she added.
Adeyeye urged students to become agents of change by promoting positive values and helping their peers make informed choices. She reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting society from counterfeit drugs through youth reorientation.
In a presentation, Musa Haruna highlighted the campaign’s role in enhancing community awareness and curbing drug abuse in the state. He said the goal was to steer young people away from anti-social behavior while educating them about NAFDAC’s regulatory responsibilities.
Musa Usman, a student, praised the initiative and pledged to educate his peers about the risks of illicit drug use.
