The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) has safeguarded over 5 million titles in 13 million volumes of intellectual resources, ensuring the preservation of Nigeria’s heritage.
The disclosure was made by the National Librarian, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, at a press conference in Abuja on Friday to commemorate the library’s 60th anniversary.
Highlighting the library’s accomplishments, Anunobi revealed the issuance of 1.5 million International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) and more than 20,000 International Serials Numbers (ISSN).
“NLN is primarily established as the nation’s memory, tasked with collecting all intellectual resources published and unpublished in Nigeria, by Nigerians, or about Nigeria, and preserving them for posterity.
“Currently, the NLN holds over 5 million titles in 13 million volumes of resources distributed nationwide, including 2.5 million titles and 7.5 million volumes of Nigerian origin.
“Since the production of the first National Bibliography of Nigeria (NBN), the library has consistently produced more than 20 editions, which serve as reference materials and cataloging tools for both national and international audiences,” she stated.
She also highlighted the establishment of over 100 literacy centers and reading clubs aimed at fostering a culture of reading among citizens.
As part of the anniversary celebration, the library will unveil its 2025-2030 strategic plan under the theme “The Future of Libraries in a Digital Age: Preserving Heritage, Expanding Access, and Engaging Youth.”
