The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka, Akwa Ibom, has apprehended three suspects attempting to smuggle 2,000 litres of petrol to Cameroon.

The arrest occurred on Wednesday evening during a routine night patrol at Mbo River, according to Navy Capt. Uche Aneke, the Commanding Officer of the base. Aneke disclosed this while handing over the suspects, along with the seized items and other contraband, to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Friday.

During the operation, a wooden vessel carrying 1,000 cartons of various beer brands and other goods was intercepted. A thorough search revealed drums containing 2,000 litres of petrol concealed beneath the cartons.

Capt. Aneke issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in smuggling or illegal activities within Nigerian waters, emphasizing the Navy’s dedication to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain.

“The Navy, under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, remains committed to combating maritime crimes. Criminals operating in the FOB Ibaka area and beyond will be detected through advanced surveillance equipment and intelligence,” Aneke said.

The Commanding Officer assured that offenders would face prosecution and reiterated that Nigeria’s waters are off-limits for unlawful activities.

Willie Sunday, Assistant Superintendent of Corps for the NSCDC in Akwa Ibom, received the suspects and seized items, confirming that the corps would carry out further investigations and initiate prosecution where necessary.

This operation underscores the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and ensure the safety of Nigeria’s coastal regions.
