The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted drug consignments valued at N16.6 billion, concealed in shipments heading to the United States, United Kingdom, Cyprus, and Oman. The agency discovered opioids hidden in the soles of shoes, hair attachments, and other items during routine inspections at various Nigerian ports.
According to a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the seizures occurred at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Tincan Port, and Port Harcourt Port. Among the intercepted items were 2,118 tramadol pills concealed in 13 pairs of shoes bound for Cyprus, seized on Oct. 12. A subsequent search at the sender’s residence in Enugu led to the recovery of 380 more pills, N968,880 in cash, and a Toyota Avalon.
Additional drugs, including 293 ampoules of promethazine and pentazocine, along with 1.69 kg of cannabis and tramadol tablets hidden in hair attachments, were seized at three courier firms. A separate operation at Tincan Port and Port Harcourt Port uncovered 26.25 million tramadol pills, 508,400 bottles of codeine syrup, 10 million Toradol Benzhexol tablets, and 700 kg of methamphetamine.
The NDLEA also detained suspect Tsolaye Eburajolo in Lagos for attempting to smuggle a synthetic cannabis strain known as “Loud,” weighing 28 kg, from Canada. Officers rejected a N10 million bribe offered to secure his release, retaining it as evidence for prosecution.
