NELFUND Clarifies Lack of Student Loan Disbursement to South-East Institutions

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has addressed concerns over the absence of South-East institutions in the recent disbursement of student loans, clarifying that there is no discrimination in the allocation process.

This response follows public concerns raised by an X user, Santiago Leo, tweeting as #Donaldsplendo, who noted that none of the 19 beneficiary institutions listed by NELFUND were from the South-East region.

NELFUND explained that loans are only disbursed to institutions that complete the required verification process. According to the agency, a total of N2.9 billion was allocated to 27,667 students from 19 institutions nationwide.

However, no South-East institution, including UNIZIK, FUTO, MOUAU, or the University of Nigeria (UNN), had responded to the verification list, which is a prerequisite for disbursement.

Responding to the concerns on X, NELFUND clarified that “geopolitical zones are not a factor” in the disbursement process and urged institutions in the South-East to complete the necessary steps so their students can benefit from the loan scheme.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that eligible students across the country have access to the funds once their institutions fulfill the verification requirements.
