British rapper and Netflix actor Ghetts has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.

The 41-year-old musician, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, allegedly failed to stop after hitting the victim in Ilford, north-east London, on October 18. The young man later died in hospital.

Ghetts appeared at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, the same day the victim passed away. Prosecutors said the charge is expected to be upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving at his next court appearance.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on October 27. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information about the incident.

Ghetts, known for his critically acclaimed albums and collaborations with top artists such as Stormzy, Skepta, and Ed Sheeran, has received multiple accolades, including Best Male Act at the 2021 MOBO Awards and the 2024 MOBO Pioneer Award for his contributions to British black culture.

His 2021 album, Conflict of Interest, reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and earned national airplay on BBC Radio 1, Kiss 100, and BBC Radio 1Xtra. Ghetts has also performed at Glastonbury Festival multiple times and starred in the hit 2024 Netflix series Supacell.
