The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has refuted claims that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is facing contract termination.
Recent speculation suggested Chelle’s future with the Nigerian national team was uncertain following the disappointing results in the March 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which jeopardized the country’s qualification hopes.
However, a top NFF official has dismissed the reports, calling them “fake news.” The official, who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity, clarified that the federation’s executive committee had not discussed any contract termination and that Chelle remained fully in charge of the team.
“There is nothing like that,” the official stated. “As a board member, I can confirm that no such issue has been raised regarding the coach’s contract. These rumors are unfounded.”
The official further revealed that Chelle was currently in Europe to engage with Nigerian players and scout for new talents eligible to represent the Super Eagles. Among those he is expected to meet is Arsenal prodigy Ethan Nwaneri, whose potential switch to Nigeria gained traction after being overlooked by England in the last international break.
“The coach is in Europe to meet some players, and Nwaneri is among them,” the source added.
Chelle, who signed a two-year contract in January, has overseen only two matches since taking charge. He led Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali but was held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo last Tuesday.
Despite the mixed results, the NFF insists Chelle remains at the helm, focusing on strengthening the squad ahead of upcoming fixtures.
