NICOWA launches ICT upgrade to boost students’ digital skills

The Nigerian Correctional Officers’ Wives Association (NICOWA) has strengthened digital education in its schools with the ground-breaking of a new school hall and state-of-the-art computer laboratory in Abuja.

Speaking at the ceremony on Friday in Abuja, the President of NICOWA, Mrs Victoria Nwakuche, said the project was a bold investment in the future of children under the association’s care.

This, she said, was especially at a time when most examinations in Nigeria had become computer-based.

She said the facilities were essential to ensuring that NICOWA students were not left behind in a rapidly advancing digital era.

She added that the ICT centre would equip learners with critical technological skills while the hall would support examinations, academic activities, and other school functions.

Mrs Nwakuche noted that the project aligned with NICOWA’s long-standing commitment to educational advancement, welfare support and national development.

She described the initiative as more than a construction effort, calling it “a transformative step that will shape learning, innovation and opportunities for generations”.

She expressed gratitude to the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, Prince Arthur Eze, senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for their support.

She also applauded the Managing Director of Borstal Microfinance, NICOWA National Executive members and NICOWA/NICIWA members for their support.

Nwakuche commended all individuals who had worked behind the scenes to bring the vision to life, describing their efforts as invaluable to the association’s progress.

She prayed for the successful execution of the project and reaffirmed NICOWA’s commitment to raising well-prepared, digitally skilled students capable of thriving in national and global spaces.

In his remarks, the Controller-General reaffirmed the Service’s full support for the NICOWA as the association commenced the construction of the new examination hall and state-of-the-art computer laboratory for its school.

Nwakuche said the Service was fully aligned with NICOWA’s vision for modern learning facilities, especially as digital literacy and computer-based examinations continue to shape the country’s educational landscape.

He described the project as a legacy effort by the NICOWA leadership and said the NCoS was excited to align with the association to develop modern learning infrastructure within the correctional community.

“I have been briefed on the need for the examination hall and ICT centre. The project is timely and essential for preparing students for the future.

“NICOWA Schools had grown in leaps and bounds, and the new project would further position the school as a leading institution,” he said.

He assured them of the Service’s continued support, saying NCoS remained committed to encouraging initiatives that promote quality education.

Nwakuche added that the initiative was particularly meaningful because inmates in correctional facilities were now computer literate and taking ICT-compliant examinations.

He said it was only appropriate that the children of correctional officers benefit from the same level of technological advancement.

Representatives from the Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) and other stakeholders commended the initiative and pledged their support for the growth of the school.
