Nigerian artists have taken center stage in the Grammy Awards nominations, dominating the Best African Music Performance category for the 67th edition. The Recording Academy announced the nominees on Friday, spotlighting several Nigerian stars.
Burna Boy and Asake are among the leading contenders, with Burna Boy nominated for his hit single “Higher” and Asake earning a nod for “MMS,” his collaboration with Wizkid. Davido also garnered his second nomination in the category, thanks to his feature on Chris Brown’s track “Sensational,” which also secured Lojay his first Grammy nomination.
Adding to the lineup, Yemi Alade celebrates her first solo nomination for her hit “Tomorrow,” while Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” receives a nomination in the same category. Tems stands out as the only African artist with three nominations across global music categories, with her debut album Born in the Wild competing for Best Global Music Album and her single “Burning” up for Best R&B Song.
Rising star Rema joins the Grammy list with a nomination for Best Global Music Album for his second album, HEIS. Other notable Nigerian nominees include Jordan Adetunji for his viral track “Kelani” and Bloody Civilian, who earned a spot in the Best Reggae Album category with his song on the One Love soundtrack, commemorating Bob Marley.
This year’s nomination is Burna Boy’s sixth consecutive Grammy nod, marking a record for Nigerian artists. Since his 2020 nomination and 2021 win for Twice as Tall, African music’s presence has grown significantly on the Grammy stage.
Globally, Beyoncé leads with 11 nominations, including Album, Record, and Song of the Year for Cowboy Carter, spanning pop, rap, country, and Americana categories. Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone each follow with seven nominations, while Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Sabrina Carpenter have six each.
The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.
