Nigerian student enrolment in U.S. colleges and universities reached 20,029 during the 2023/2024 academic year, securing Nigeria’s position as the 7th largest source of international students globally and the leading country in Africa.
The figures, released in the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, represent a 13.5% increase from the previous year. Nigerian students continue to contribute significantly to the U.S. academic community, known for their academic excellence and dedication to higher education.
The report also highlighted that U.S. institutions currently host a record-breaking 1,126,690 international students, marking the highest enrolment in history. More than 55% of Nigerian students in the U.S. are pursuing graduate-level studies, enriching the academic and cultural fabric of American universities.
“This milestone aligns with the 75th anniversary of the Open Doors Report, which serves as the leading benchmark for international educational exchange in the United States. Nigeria’s strong showing underscores the enduring ties between the two nations,” the U.S. Embassy stated.
Sub-Saharan Africa remains the fastest-growing region for international education, with a 13% rise in student mobility in 2023/2024, building on an 18% increase recorded the previous year.
The surge in Nigerian student enrolment reflects a growing demand for U.S. education and underscores the robust educational partnerships between Nigeria and the United States. Educational exchanges between the two nations continue to foster mutual understanding and global collaboration.
