Nigeria Receives 50 Tonnes of Flood Relief from UAE to Aid Displaced Persons

The Federal Government of Nigeria has received 50 tonnes of humanitarian aid from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to support internally displaced persons affected by recent floods across the country.

The relief materials, which arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, were presented by UAE Ambassador Salem Alshamsi, on behalf of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Al Nahyan. The donation includes essential supplies aimed at alleviating the hardship caused by the floods in various states.

Ambassador Alshamsi emphasized the UAE’s longstanding commitment to assisting nations in times of natural disasters. “This urgent humanitarian aid is to support our friends in Nigeria, particularly in flood-affected areas,” he stated.

Dr. Ahmed Dunoma, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Nigerian government, lauding the UAE’s generosity and the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations. “This aid will greatly help in reducing the suffering of those impacted by the floods,” Dunoma remarked.

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, assured that the materials would be promptly distributed to flood-hit areas, including Borno, Enugu, and Kaduna. “This aid could not have come at a more critical time, as 29 states and 172 local government areas have been affected by flooding this year, impacting over one million people,” she said.

The flood disaster, which began in April 2024, has displaced over 625,000 people and claimed 259 lives.
