Nigerian Army Offers Free Medical Services to Over 100 Lagos Residents

Over 100 residents of the Iwaya community in Lagos State benefited from a free medical outreach organized by the Nigerian Army during its Combat Service Support Training Week 2024.

The outreach, which took place on Monday at the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps in Ojuelegba, Lagos, marked the start of the training week scheduled from August 19 to 23. Major General Philip Eromosele, Commander of the Corps of Engineers, represented the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, at the event, highlighting the significance of the outreach as part of the Army’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Eromosele emphasized that the Nigerian Army regularly engages in civic-military operations to strengthen its relationship with the civilian population. “This medical outreach is one of the ways we give back to the community, enhancing their health and well-being. A healthy population is key to national productivity,” he stated.

He encouraged residents to take advantage of the free medical services, which included blood pressure checks, malaria treatment, and other essential health interventions. “We urge you to continue supporting the Army, as this will enable us to serve you better,” Eromosele added.

The commander expressed gratitude to the Yaba Local Government Development Area (LGA), traditional rulers, and members of the Iwaya community for their cooperation and trust in the Nigerian Army. “Events like this are routine as part of our efforts to promote civic-military cooperation and foster strong relationships within the community. We will continue to identify communities in need and provide as much assistance as possible,” he said.

Oba Sulaiman Ogun-Oloko, the traditional ruler of Iwaya Yaba Kingdom, also expressed his appreciation for the Nigerian Army’s gesture, noting that while the Army’s primary duty is to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty, its CSR initiatives also provide vital relief to Nigerians.

“We are grateful to the Nigerian Army for choosing our kingdom for this medical outreach. Although this is the first time such an event is happening in Yaba, it is not the first in Nigeria, and we hope the Army continues its humanitarian efforts,” Oba Ogun-Oloko said.

Additionally, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that two physically challenged individuals, Mr. Ganui Qadir and Master Shedrack Hunsa, were given wheelchairs during the outreach, while several others received eyeglasses and medication for malaria, typhoid, and other common illnesses.
