Nigerian Woman Sentenced to 15 Months in Prison for Assaulting 9-Year-Old Daughter in Ghana
A Nigerian woman, Beauty Alakwe, has been sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting her nine-year-old daughter in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
Alakwe, 34, was convicted on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, by a Circuit Court sitting in Tafo, Kumasi, after she was found guilty of causing harm to the child at Duase, near Kenyasi. The court also imposed a fine of 6,000 Ghanaian cedis, which she failed to pay, leading to her remand at the Kumasi Central Prisons to serve the sentence.
The case followed a report made on November 22 by a concerned resident, with support from the local Assembly Member, after the incident came to light. Investigations were subsequently conducted by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Kenyasi District under the Tafo-Pankrono Police Division.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court directed the Department of Social Welfare in Mamponteng to work with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to ensure the safety, welfare and reunification of the victim and her nine-year-old brother with their family in Nigeria.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended members of the public for their cooperation during the investigation and reiterated its opposition to mob justice, stressing its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons.
