NiMet Forecasts Nationwide Thunderstorms, Rainfall for Three Days
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast warning of thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday.
According to NiMet’s outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected on Monday morning in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. The northern region is likely to experience more thunderstorms later in the day, with possible flash floods in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
In the central region, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected on Monday morning, alongside moderate rainfall in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the FCT, and Benue. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for most parts of the region later in the day.
The southern states will begin Monday with cloudy skies, while Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are expected to record moderate rainfall. Rains are likely to spread across most of the region by evening.
On Tuesday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are predicted in the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms over Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa. Later in the day, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba are expected to experience thunderstorms.
For the central region, moderate rains are likely in Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kwara, and Nasarawa in the morning, followed by thunderstorms across Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT later in the day. Southern states such as Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta will see cloudy skies with chances of moderate rain in the morning, before light to moderate showers spread across the region by evening.
On Wednesday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals will dominate the north, with chances of thunderstorms and light rainfall in Sokoto and Zamfara. By afternoon, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto. The central region will experience light rains in the morning across the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger, with thunderstorms likely in Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger later in the day. Cloudy skies are also forecast across the south, with moderate rains expected by evening.
NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy downpours and urged farmers to refrain from applying fertilisers or pesticides before rainfall to prevent nutrient loss. Residents were cautioned to secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances, and avoid tall trees during thunderstorms.
