NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Thunderstorms, Dust Haze Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted thunderstorms and hazy weather conditions across parts of Nigeria from Sunday through Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicted moderate dust haze over the northern states of Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa.

The agency also projected isolated thunderstorms in parts of Adamawa and Taraba States throughout the forecast period.

For the North-Central region, NiMet expects partly cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening across the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.

In the South, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with widespread thunderstorms expected later in the day across several southern states.

On Monday, the forecast indicates sunny skies over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms likely in Taraba and Adamawa. By afternoon, storms are expected to spread to parts of Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe States.

The North-Central region is expected to experience morning thunderstorms over Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue States, with additional storms later in the day.

In the southern states, morning thunderstorms are forecasted over Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo, followed by further thunderstorms later.

On Tuesday, NiMet predicts sunny skies with patches of clouds in the north, along with morning thunderstorms over Adamawa and Taraba States. Thunderstorms are expected later in the day in parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba.

The North-Central region will likely see partly cloudy skies in the morning, transitioning to thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening over the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger States.

For the South, morning thunderstorms are predicted in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa, with more thunderstorms expected later across several states.

NiMet urged the public to take precautions against strong winds that may accompany thunderstorms and advised northern residents to be mindful of dust particles in the air.

Airline operators were also encouraged to obtain detailed, airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning, while residents were advised to stay updated via the agency’s website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
