NiMet Forecasts Widespread Thunderstorms, Rain from Monday to Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning the public to take necessary precautions.

In its weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, the agency said Monday would begin with morning thunderstorms in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano States. Later in the day, similar weather conditions are expected to persist in Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

“In the North-central region, morning thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger and Nasarawa States,” NiMet stated.

It added that afternoon and evening thunderstorms with rain are likely in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Benue States.

In the southern region, the forecast shows a cloudy morning with prospects of rain in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. Rain showers are also expected later in the day in Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

On Tuesday, NiMet predicted that parts of Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba States in the northern region would experience morning thunderstorms and rain. The same weather pattern is expected in Taraba, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Katsina by afternoon or evening.

“In the North-central region, thunderstorms with rains are over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa States during the morning period,” the forecast read.

Later in the day, the weather agency expects storms in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, and Plateau.

Southern states including Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are likely to experience morning thunderstorms. Rains are also forecast for Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa in the afternoon and evening.

By Wednesday, the agency projected morning thunderstorms and rain in parts of Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba, with continued rainfall expected later in the day in Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Adamawa.

“In the North-central region, thunderstorms with rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger and Benue during the morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of Nasarawa, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger,” the report added.

For the southern region, morning rains are anticipated in Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. Widespread rainfall is expected across the entire region later in the day.

NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede the rains in some areas, urging the public to take precautionary measures.

“Ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision and avoid driving under heavy rain. Disconnect electrical appliances from sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” the agency advised.

Airline operators were also encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for better planning.
