NIS Increases Passport Fees to Boost Quality and Speed – Comptroller
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an increase in international passport fees, citing the need to improve the quality of service, processing speed, and accessibility.
The NIS Comptroller in Adamawa, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed, made this known on Monday during a public sensitization exercise in Yola. According to Mohammed, the fee hike will take effect from Sept. 1, with a 32-page passport booklet valid for five years costing ₦50,000, up from ₦35,000. The 64-page booklet, valid for ten years, will now cost ₦100,000, compared to the previous ₦70,000.
He noted that the fee increase would not apply to applicants abroad.
“This is an upgraded passport, more durable and aligned with international standards. It includes enhanced security features like fingerprints, making it harder to counterfeit,” Mohammed explained.
He urged citizens applying for or renewing their passports to use the official NIS platforms to avoid scams, warning against the use of middlemen. Mohammed also appealed to religious leaders to inform their communities about the changes, while applicants before the deadline will be charged the old rate.
The NIS plans to extend the awareness campaign to local government areas, starting with Mubi.
Representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Council, Adamawa, expressed appreciation for the enlightenment efforts and promised to relay the message to their respective followers.
The reports gathered that the NIS has taken its campaign to motor parks and major streets in the state capital.
