The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to regularly check their blood pressure and cholesterol levels as part of efforts to prevent Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs).

Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, NOA Director in Jigawa, gave the advice in a message to mark the 2025 World Heart Day on Monday in Dutse.

World Heart Day, observed every Sept. 29, is aimed at raising awareness about CVDs, which remain the leading cause of death globally and a growing concern in Nigeria.

According to Tijjani, CVDs account for nearly 18 million deaths worldwide each year, representing about 31 per cent of all deaths.

“In Nigeria, one in four adults is at risk of developing coronary artery disease,” he said, adding that most heart-related deaths can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices.

He identified unhealthy diets—such as excessive intake of salt, sugar and saturated fats—alongside physical inactivity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, chronic stress and poor sleep as major risk factors for CVDs.

To reduce the risk, Tijjani advised Nigerians to embrace healthier living by eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins; staying active with at least 30 minutes of exercise most days; quitting smoking; limiting alcohol consumption; monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels; managing stress; and getting enough rest.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to creating sustained awareness about CVDs and other health concerns across the country.
