Norway’s Queen Sonja, 87, is scheduled to have a pacemaker implanted on Thursday following heart complications during a recent ski trip, the Norwegian royal household announced.

The procedure will be performed at Oslo University Hospital, where the queen is expected to remain for one to two days for recovery, according to the statement.

Queen Sonja, married to King Harald V, was initially hospitalized in Lillehammer over the weekend due to atrial fibrillation, a condition characterized by an irregular and rapid heart rhythm. After a brief stay, she was discharged with her heart rhythm restored to normal.

Atrial fibrillation, if untreated, can increase the risk of stroke and other complications, making the pacemaker a critical step in managing the condition.

The palace has expressed optimism about her recovery, underscoring that she is receiving top-notch medical care.
