The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa Command, has arrested two persons over alleged vandalism and theft of armoured cable in Taura Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse, on Tuesday.
Tijjani said corps` operatives swooped on and arrested the suspects on Friday at Gugungu as they allegedly attempted to dispose of the stolen cable.
“Our personnel apprehended two young men on a suspected case of vandalism and theft of streetlight armoured cable in Gujungu town of Taura local government.
“The suspects, aged 22 and 25 and residents of Dugunu village, were arrested on Friday, at Gujungu Market in an attempt to sell it.
“The vandalised armoured cable covered an estimated area of about half kilometer, measuring 43.33 meters and valued at N650, 000.
“They had its rubber insulation stripped and the copper wire neatly wrapped, compressed and packaged by the suspects for concealment and ease of transportation,” Tijjani said.
He explained that when interrogated, the suspects said they were convinced by a scrap buyer they identified as Nazifi, who assured them that he would buy the copper wire at a reasonable price.
The command’s spokesperson, who noted that the suspects had allegedly confessed to the crime, added that they would be charged to court upon completion of investigation.
Tijjani called on residents and other members of the public to be vigilant, and assist the corps with relevant information help security operatives combat crime and criminality in the state.
