The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Katsina Command, has apprehended a staff member of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) over allegations of stealing a prepaid meter.

Addressing journalists in Katsina on Tuesday, the Command’s Spokesman, SC Buhari Hamisu, disclosed that the suspect was accused of trespassing, tampering with a meter, and theft.

Hamisu revealed that the 38-year-old suspect, an employee of KEDCO’s Daura Regional Office, was arrested following a complaint by Alhaji Lawal Gadi of Tundun Wada Quarters, Daura, who reported that his prepaid meter had been unlawfully removed.

“The meter, found in the suspect’s possession at his residence in Low-Cost Housing Estate, Daura, will be presented as evidence during his prosecution,” Hamisu stated.

Hamisu further emphasized the NSCDC’s commitment to tackling vandalism, economic sabotage, and other criminal activities in the state.

“The commandant assures the public of adequate security as we remain resolute in uncovering the activities of vandals, economic saboteurs, and criminals in Katsina State,” he said.

According to him, the Commandant, Aminu Ahmad-Datti, expressed gratitude to residents for their cooperation and urged continued support through actionable intelligence.

“Vandals, thieves, and those tampering with private property endanger the socio-economic well-being of our society. They must be flushed out to ensure the safety of all,” Hamisu added.

The suspect, while responding to journalists, admitted to removing the meter but claimed it was an abandoned three-phase prepaid meter.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Sani Bala-Sani, the Head of Corporate Communications at KEDCO, said he was unaware of the incident but promised to investigate the matter.
