Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama extended their congratulations to Donald Trump on his recent U.S. presidential election victory, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles.

“This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on a whole host of issues,” the Obamas said in a joint statement. “But living in a democracy means recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out and accepting the peaceful transfer of power.”

Reflecting on recent years, Obama acknowledged that Americans have faced numerous challenges, from the impacts of a historic pandemic and subsequent economic strains to societal changes that have left many feeling disillusioned. “Those conditions have created headwinds for democratic incumbents worldwide, and last night showed that America is not immune,” he noted.

Despite these challenges, the former president called for unity and urged Americans to maintain civility, even amidst political disagreements. “Progress requires us to extend good faith and grace even to people with whom we deeply disagree. That’s how we’ve come this far, and it’s how we’ll keep building a country that is more fair and more just, more equal and more free,” Obama stated.

During the final weeks of the campaign, Obama had been a vocal supporter of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, highlighting her dedication to public service. He also criticized Trump’s background, questioning his understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary Americans.
