Ochonogor, Eyakpobeyan Advance to World Athletics U20 Finals
Prestina Ochonogor delivered a standout performance for Team Nigeria at the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, by securing a spot in the women’s long jump final. On Tuesday, Ochonogor leaped 6.28 meters, placing second in Qualification Group A and second overall out of 25 competitors.
The 18-year-old, with a personal best of 6.79 meters, will aim for a podium finish in the final, scheduled for Wednesday evening.
In other events, Team Nigeria’s 4x400m mixed relay team, consisting of Oseiwe Salami, Odot Udo, Gafari Badmus, and Favour Onyah, set a season-best time of 3:25.59 but failed to advance after finishing third in their heat.
Justina Eyakpobeyan also qualified for the women’s 100m final, improving her time to 11.56 seconds in the semi-finals after running 11.61 seconds in the opening round. Unfortunately, teammate Chioma Nweke exited the 100m after placing sixth in her heat with a time of 12.24 seconds, and Chidera Ezeakor was eliminated in the men’s 100m, finishing seventh with 10.92 seconds.
The championships will continue through Saturday.
