Legendary Hollywood actress Diane Keaton has passed away at the age of 79.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, emergency responders were called to Keaton’s California home at 8:08 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, and transported a 79-year-old woman to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s with her iconic roles in The Godfather films and her frequent collaborations with filmmaker Woody Allen. Her performance in the 1977 classic Annie Hall earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, cementing her status as one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.
Over her five-decade career, Keaton appeared in numerous acclaimed films, including The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, and the Book Club franchise. In 2021, she starred in Justin Bieber’s music video for Ghost, delighting fans with her enduring charm and humor.
Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she was the eldest of four children. Her father worked as a civil engineer, while her mother, a homemaker, inspired her creative ambitions. “Secretly in her heart of hearts, she probably wanted to be an entertainer,” Keaton once told People magazine.
Adopting her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, for her stage career, she became known not only for her acting but also for her independent spirit. She never married and chose to adopt two children — her daughter Dexter in 1996 and her son Duke in 2001.
“Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist; it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time,” she told Ladies’ Home Journal in 2008.
Keaton was romantically linked to several Hollywood icons, including Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty, but remained proud of her independence. “I’m really glad I didn’t get married,” she told People in 2019. “I’m an oddball.”
Diane Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke.
