Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the release of 36 inmates from correctional facilities in Ilesa and Ile-Ife to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.

The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the convicts were granted amnesty under the constitutional powers vested in the governor by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The move followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

In a proclamation signed on September 24, 2025, and sealed under the authority of Osun State, Adeleke officially extended clemency to the selected convicts, most of whom had been serving sentences for minor offences such as stealing and conspiracy. Many had already completed substantial portions of their jail terms.

Governor Adeleke explained that the gesture was in line with the spirit of Nigeria’s Independence celebration, emphasizing compassion, justice, and the opportunity for renewal.

“As a government of the people, we remain committed to upholding justice while extending mercy to deserving citizens. This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for true rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start,” he said.

The Independence Day amnesty, according to Adeleke, symbolizes both national progress and the state’s commitment to second chances for reformed individuals.
