More than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to participate in this year’s Hajj, according to a government spokesperson.

Hajj, one of Islam’s Five Pillars, is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able. It involves a series of sacred rituals centered in Mecca and its surrounding areas.

Ghassan Al-Nuwaimi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Hajj, announced the number on Wednesday but did not disclose how many domestic pilgrims are participating this year. In 2024, Saudi Arabia hosted 1,611,310 pilgrims from outside the country.

On Wednesday, pilgrims made their way to Mount Arafat, some on foot and under sweltering conditions, with temperatures nearing 40°C (104°F). Some carried elders on their shoulders, while others paused along the way to eat or rest before settling into their tents.

Mount Arafat, located southeast of Mecca, is a sacred site in Islam where Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon. The Day of Arafat—observed with prayer and reflection from dawn until sunset—is considered the holiest day in the Islamic calendar.

After sunset on Thursday, pilgrims will travel to Muzdalifah, a desert plain, to collect pebbles for the symbolic stoning of the devil—part of the following day’s rituals.

To support the massive influx of worshippers, Saudi Arabia has invested billions in crowd control and safety measures. Heat, however, remains a major challenge during the pilgrimage.

Health Minister Fahad bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel recently told the Associated Press that 10,000 trees have been planted for added shade. He also noted an increase in hospital beds, and that the number of paramedics has tripled to better respond to medical emergencies.

The Hajj continues to be one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, drawing millions annually in a deeply spiritual journey of unity, devotion, and endurance.
