Over 20 Civilians Killed in RSF Shelling in Sinnar, Sudan

At least 20 civilians were killed and more than 100 injured after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched an artillery attack on Sinnar city in central Sudan, according to local aid organizations.

The Sinnar Youth Gathering, a local volunteer group, reported that the RSF shelled the city’s market and the Al-Muwazafeen neighborhood indiscriminately on Sunday, causing widespread destruction.

The Sudanese Doctors Network, a non-governmental organization, described the attack as a “massacre” of unarmed civilians. The group reported 21 fatalities and over 70 injuries from the shelling, mainly targeting the crowded market area.

As of now, the RSF has not commented on the incident.

Since June, the RSF has seized control of large parts of Sinnar state, including the capital, Singa, while the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) maintain control over the eastern region.

The ongoing conflict between the RSF and SAF, which began on April 15, 2023, has claimed at least 16,650 lives, according to reports. Fighting in Sinnar alone has displaced more than 725,000 people, based on estimates from the International Organisation for Migration.

The latest UN data reveals that around 10.7 million people are internally displaced within Sudan, while 2.2 million have fled to neighboring countries.
